A. C. Bhaktivedanta Also known as Swami Prabhupada, (born Sept. 1st, 1896 in Calcutta - died on Nov. 14 1997, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India), Indian writer and religious leader who founded in 1965 in 1965 the International Society for Krishna Consciousness popularly referred to by Hare Krishna. In 1920, Bhaktivedanta finished his B.A. in Chemistry from the Scottish Christian College in Calcutta At that point his family had arranged the wedding for him and he then set up a pharmacy. In 1922, his guru an ordained religious leader in the Vaishnava Hindu sect, urged him to spread the doctrines of Krishna across in the Western world. Then Bhaktivedanta spent a lot of time as a an editor, lecturer, writer as well as translator of the Vaishnava and was officially initiated as a disciple in Allahabad.
Since his family didn't adhere to his religious beliefs, Bhaktivedanta turned over his business to a son . He abdicated all family ties in 1954, allowing him to dedicate his entire time to his spiritual work. He was awarded the title Swami in 1959 and then in 1965, he set sail to Boston, Mass., U.S. A few months later, he relocated in New York City, where was established the central office for Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna movement on the Lower East Side. In a shopfront that he ran courses on Vedic culture and believed that it could influence the mind of a society afflicted by excessive materialism. The movement was particularly popular with young people and several of the books by Swami were studied at the campuses of universities and colleges.
