Despite her seemingly idyllic upbringing, Angelou had a difficult life. While her family was impoverished and famine was common in her hometown, she worked as a sex worker, nightclub dancer, fry cook, and journalist. In 1982, she was named the Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. During her time there, she also forged strong friendships with Martin Luther King Jr.
One of her most famous poems, "Africa," was written about the continent's resources, which were stolen by European imperialists, who took their people to the Americas and sold them as slaves. Angelou compared Africa to a beautiful woman, and describes the white invaders as selling African sons and bleeding the continent with guns. She also reflects on the value of working on oneself.
